FSB AWARDS CEREMONY – SCOTTISH FINALISTS

A wonderful afternoon was had by all at the FSB awards ceremony for the Scottish finalists. Held in the stunning Old College Playfair Library in Edinburgh, there was a record number of applicants this year. With such a high calibre of businesses in all the categories, it was such a privilege to be nominated for ‘Employer of the Year’ and ‘Family Business of the Year’. Sadly, we didn’t get to take home any prizes this year, but huge congratulations to our category winners Cruise Loch Ness and AJ Engineering.

We will be back next year to try again.

ANOTHER NEW JOURNEYMAN AT ROBBIE FLUID ENGINEERING

Stephen Adams, 24, started his journey with Robbie Fluid Engineering in May 2016 after being one of several apprentices being made redundant from an onshore Oil & Gas firm.  He had already completed an HNC in Mechanical Engineering, and was part way through his Modern Apprenticeship with West Lothian College before starting with Robbie Fluid Engineering.  Working in the depot full time allowed Stephen to learn from his fellow journeymen who had trained and developed in the same way.

Stephen completed his apprenticeship in April 2018 and works for Robbie Fluid Engineering to further his knowledge and continue his development.  Stephen is now in the process of gaining further experience in the field.  Over the past 6 months Stephen has attended many jobs, breakdowns, and installation projects called into our office.

Mark Robbie says “It is great to have been able to help Stephen keep his career on track, and it is going to be interesting to see what sort of projects we can be involved in together”.

NEW JOURNEYMAN AT ROBBIE FLUID ENGINEERING

Callum McCarthy, 21, started his journey into a Modern Apprenticeship with Robbie Fluid Engineering straight from school at the age of 16.  He also attended West Lothian College one day per week to continue to improve his skills and understanding, and also to give him the opportunity to share his experiences with other apprentices in similar fields.

Callum successfully completed his apprenticeship in March 2017 and works for Robbie Fluid Engineering to further continue his development.  As well as assisting customers within our business, Callum is also part of the on-call engineer team available 24/7/365 to attend customer sites.  He is heavily involved in the training and development of our current young apprentice.

Managing Director, Mark Robbie, recognizes the value of on-the-job training.  He says “Callum has developed well, in particular over the past 24 months. He should have a good sense of achievement for what he has done while in training.”

BFPA HOSE ASSEMBLY SKILLS TRAINING

As well as being on hand to help with all of your hydraulic needs, Robbie Fluid Engineering has now formed a training partnership with the British Fluid Power Association (BFPA).

Training is something that Robbie Fluid has always ranked high in the list of priorities, by continuously taking on young staff and supporting through to apprenticeship.  This conscious decision to impart knowledge and experience has always been to support the continuance of the hydraulic and engineering industry, and the skills involved.  This ethos can now be expanded through offering our customers the chance to be part of one of the many training courses set out by the BFPA.

Robbie Fluid Engineering has recently become an approved BFPA training facility, one of only a few in Scotland.  Check out the link below to find our facility on the BFPA training academy website, and also details of the courses available.

https://bfpatrainingacademy.co.uk/approved-training-facilities/

Our Managing Director, Mark Robbie, is now a fully credited trainer to fulfil the Hose Assembly Skills Training Programme.  The most recent course ran at the beginning of May, with each attendee spending 2 days both in the classroom environment for theoretical study, and on the shop floor for practical experience.   At the end of the course each attendee walked away with the certification of skills achieved, registration on the BFPA national database, and also a BFPA training passport in the post detailing each course completed.

Robbie Fluid Engineering like to work closely with our customers to identify what other training courses would be of benefit to them.  Having a trained workforce is a key asset to any business, therefore our objective is to undertake more of the BFPA training programmes as and when required.

Visit the BFPA website for full details of what the Hose Assembly Skills Training Programme includes.  Contact us direct to arrange a date for this informative course at our unit based in West Lothian, Scotland.

SECRETARY OF STATE FOR SCOTLAND ALISTAIR CARMICHAEL MENTIONS ROBBIE FLUID ENGINEERING AT FSB ANNUAL DINNER

Alistair Carmichael related his experience of a visit to Robbie Fluid Engineering as keynote speaker at the Annual Regional Dinner for the Federation of Small Businesses. He said “People like Mark go to great lengths, work long hours and take big risks to establish small businesses. Whatever their reasons might be, the efforts of small businesses should be supported and not hindered by Government.” Praise indeed. Robbie Fluid Engineering Ltd, have built up their specialist fluid engineering business and have now moved to new premises in Bathgate. RFE (Robbie Fluid Engineering) originally opened operations in 2006. Based close to junction 3a on the M8, a great central location, the Robbie Fluid business offers a wide range of pneumatic, hydraulic, and associated seals and filtration products and components. The aim of the business is, first of all, taking care of fluid related problems and where appropriate, bringing technology and expertise within easy reach of everybody involved in business, regardless of whether they run a large industrial site, manage a smaller maintenance, construction or commercial vehicle operation, or simply an occasional user of spares or component parts. Last year RFE were runner up as Business of the Year, judged by West Lothian Chamber of Commerce, and this year were highly commended for demonstrating excellence in the development of staff skills and knowledge. Managing Director Mark Robbie reports on RFE’s success, “we realised years ago that we could not expect the market place to deliver people to match our skill and knowledge needs, so we decided to further train our own staff. Recently our first in-house trained apprentice became a qualified engineer and within five years we expect half of our work force to be aged 25 years or younger. We were recently visited by the Secretary of State for Scotland who had heard about our training successes. We have simply grown from strength to strength”.
